Using the Fingerprint Reader on an HP ProBook 4430s

us flag

I am running Ubuntu and would like to use my fingerprint reader. This is the output of lsusb:

Bus 001 Device 003: ID 138a:003c Validity Sensors, Inc. VFS471 Fingerprint Reader

Is there a way to enable it for use in Ubuntu?

Based on the information at [Linux Hardware](https://linux-hardware.org/index.php?id=usb:138a-003c), it looks like that device is not supported by any release of Linux. [A similar question](https://askubuntu.com/q/856150/1222991) was asked a few years ago and there's some hearsay about what drivers are needed, but this is for an older version of Ubuntu. I cannot vouch for the effectiveness of the proposed solutions. Generally, fingerprint readers are not well supported in Linux because the vendors do not provide any details about their hardware. It's all reverse-engineered

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
