default keyboard behavior overridden?

ke flag

i'm running ubuntu 21.10, and just recenty updated my kernel to 5.13.0-22-generic. updating to this kernel (i think) caused some weird behaviors:

  • hitting up, left, or right arrow keys opens quodlibet (my default music player)
  • hitting the down arrow key opens quodlibet and toggles the system "turn off touchpad input" button (but only shows the "turn off touchpad" animation, the touchpad functionality remains)
  • the "del" key also does the above.
  • normal arrow functions (eg. moving the text cursor) do not happen, they are over-ridden.
  • sound volume functions do not work. not volume hotkeys, the actual system volume control has no effect (besides "full mute" or whatever volume it's currently set to).
  • ctrl-arrow / shift-arrow / alt-arrow keys seem to have no effect
  • except ctrl / shift / alt left, which acts normally apparently.

now, i know you're thinking, "just revert back to your last kernel, you idiot", but then 1. i would be back to the previous issues i was having and 2. bravely messing around like an idiot is what (probably) got me into this mess. any help or recommendations would be appreciated.

Does not seem due to a kernel update. Temporarily create a new account. Then log in to that new account. If the issue appears also there, then, yes, it could be the kernel.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
