DVD play: I can't get a disk from "aimee mann live" to play, it is almost new

Tried every trick I new, using VLC, Handbrake, SMPlayer; all nicely updated but no cigar. Stupid thing is I can try it only on one PC since I don't have a drive anywhere else. I will not die without a solution, it is just bugging me big time. I am running 20.04.3 LTS. Other dvd's do not play either. It seems like the mounting is not OK since my dvd player/writer resides at ./mnt/dvdrw and not at e.g. /dev/sr0

Thanks beforehand for reading and/or providing some help.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/PlayingDVDs You need to do this to enable DVD playing.

Yeah, I did already install that, tried some of the other pointers but gonna throw the towel. Maybe the device is broken or something, in any case not worth it to further pursue. Thanks a bunch

It is purely a permission matter since I see the contents of the disks but no application will start them saying: denied access. Looking at the permissions this is true since that says: Nobody.

Can you play other DVDs? Please [edit your question](https://askubuntu.com/posts/1384428/edit) and add the new information.

Presumably you've tried these in an actual DVD/Blue-Ray player attached to a TV and at least some of those disks play that way? Just to eliminate damage to the disks as a cause?

Yup, just tried Led Zeppelin who I've played a couple of times and The Matrix, played multiple times. Looking at the rights of the mount point it seems I have no rights whatsoever, root has some but no idea of how to approach the file as root. It seems I have to edit a file called fstab too, but again no idea how to gain write access. No need to explain I am an ubuntu newby I guess.... ;-)

What are the contents exactly? A bunch of VOB files and a few others or is it something else? Please ping me by starting your reply comments with @ChanganAuto

@ChanganAuto - Yes they are the usual suspects like: video_ts.ifo and: video_ts.vob with subsequent numbering. The Matrix also holds windows executables and Led Zeppelin has a: jacket_p folder with strange: mp2 files, could be anything.

If so then I also suspect it has something to do with the strange mount point. But it should work anyway with VLC -> Open Disk. Either replace the default path to device or use search, navigate to the DVD then select the "VIDEO_TS" folder inside. Handbrake, at least for me and as far as I can remember (it was long time ago), never opened a DVD directly, I always had to make an ISO out of it (with K3b) and then open the ISO file in Handbrake.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
