Western Digital 14 TB Desktop Drive & Ubuntu

ae flag

When using this new 14TB WD USB HDD with independent power supply the drive (according to western digital) won’t sleep, they have software for win/mac when this occurs, not Linux.

When I unmount and safely remove the drive the light keeps flashing and never stops, you can hear the drive spin down. On one occasion, this did not happen— all other uses it has.

Unplug usb from pc, lights still flashing till whenever you use the drive again, next day, whatever. When you plug the drive in, it’s not recognized. (same thing if you do this process twice back to back and don’t wait till the next day)

The fix is to unplug power supply, plug in usb, hard drive works. Since we know that ultimately this is bad for the drive, what fix is there in Ubuntu for this?

I’m using the drive daily, all help would be much appreciated!!

*"they have software for win/mac when this occurs, not Linux"* - seems to be your answer right there. If a hardware feature requires software from the manufacturer and the manufacturer does not make the software for Linux, then you probably can't use that feature. Nothing you are explaining here seems unusual to me. When you explicitly unmount a drive you need to disconnect and reconnect it to get it to mount again.

Does the case of the Drive have a power ON/OFF button or do you have to unplug the power cable? "Unplug usb from pc, lights still flashing" seems normal unless you press the power OFF button (or yank the power cord). "When you plug the drive in, it’s not recognized." This needs more explanation. Does it happen if you DON"T power off and reconnect or if you DO power off and power it back on and then reconnect?

A couple of points... I assume that this is a USB3 HDD... is it plugged into a USB2 or USB3 port on the computer? Did you use `gparted` to lay down a fresh GPT partition table (this will wipe the drive)? WD has some extra firmware ports that can be tweaked that effect spin-down and idle time. You'll probably find it easier to adjust these parameters using the Windows software supplied. The settings will carry over to Ubuntu.

When I safely remove the drive and unplug the usb, the light stays on for the external drive. @user68186 my computer won’t recognize the drive when I plug it in again, unless I first physical unplug the power chord— there is no on/off button. Western Digital Easy Store desktop drive, 14 tb.

I don't have this drive, but I have an old HDD in an enclosure that seems ti behave this way.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
