Unusable partition problem during xubuntu install. Please help

us flag

I'm struggling to successfully install xubuntu in my Windows 10 laptop computer. I made an extra partition under disk management in the windows 10 prior to starting the install and after reaching the partition page during the xubuntu install the free space I'm supposed to use is now indicated as "unusable" thus I cannot proceed further than that. Please help and kindly tell me what to do step by step in detail since I'm new to all this. My laptop is MBR and bios is legacy.

You mention MBR which has a predefined limit to maximum *primary* partitions; if these are already utilized; any remaining space cannot be used for additional partitions; ie. you can only grow existing partitions to use the space. You've not provided any useful data as to your partitioning though; do you have space in the partition table to add an extra *primary* partition? *Providing release details; a map of your partition table and all useful detail allows more useful replies*

Windows 10 uses 3 Primary partitions of the drive already leaving only room for 1 more Primary. MBR allows a maximum of 4 Primary. If you create an Extended partition you might be able to install Xubuntu in the Extended as you can have as many partitions in the Extended as you want. Creating the Extended does use 1 Primary partition.

If you created a partition using Windows that would be NTFS and could not be used by Ubuntu. You want ext4 format, which Windows cannot create.

Don't use Windows tools to create any partitions or file systems for Ubuntu. You need **unpartitioned free space** to get the guided "Install Alongside Windows" option in Ubuntu. If you truly have a MBR partition scheme, which is unusual but not impossible on W10, the MBR partition scheme does not work well for dual-boot configurations because of the limitations of 4 partitions. It is probably best to format (erase) the disk using the GPT partition scheme. You would need to reinstall both operating system.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
