Laptop not starting up after Ubuntu dual-boot with Windows 11

br flag

I am trying to dual-boot and have installed Ubuntu 20.4.3 from flash drive using Rufus.

Running Windows 11. Partition scheme GPT, Target System UEFI.

I successfully installed Ubuntu to some unallocated disk space and tested it. All was working fine, from start and restart. However, all of a sudden, now after shutting down, when I try to start or restart the laptop I just get a black screen. I think the GRUB screen is failing to load because there is some error message in the top left corner that flashes up so quick you can't read it periodically every few seconds. I can F9 to boot options, but now Ubuntu isn't there as an option anymore. This is the only way to boot windows now. Otherwise, it just gets stuck on the black screen.

When I route via the flash drive again I can see that Ubuntu is installed. I've made sure fast boot mode is off and hibernate as well. I haven't seen a post with this particular error, hence asking the question.

The only thing I can think of is that Windows performed a minor update last night. Not sure if this could be the cause.

You might be able to tell I'm new to all this, so please bear with me if this post is lacking any detail!

You mention f9, is this an HP and then what model? Windows updates may update UEFI, so you have to review those settings and may turn Windows fast start up back on. But HP does not seem to recognize boot order changes with efibootmgr. You have to use UEFI settings (not UEFI menu) to change boot order. What video card/chip. Black screen is often a video issue. When booting Ubuntu do you get grub menu or press escape & get grub menu? Then try booting with recovery mode?

Thanks for your input. Yes it’s a HP - ENVY Laptop - Intel® CoreTM i5 running windows 11. Yeh interesting you say that because I’ve noticed the boot manager changes/solutions I found elsewhere haven’t seemed to have worked. I don’t seem to get a grub menu at all, just boot options which only include the flash drive and windows. I’m sure it’s a grub error now because, since I’d only just installed it I figured why not try uninstall ubuntu and go again. Now it’s giving the following error: ‘executing grub install dev nvme0n1 failed’ I’ve tried boot repair no help

Depending on which generation Intel, you may need newest version of Ubuntu to have newer kernel & drivers. HP often requires UEFI update and SSD often need firmware update. And HP only resets boot order using UEFI settings. Grub uses efibootmgr to install & set boot order but HP does not seem to work with that. HP Envy - use UEFI to change boot order https://askubuntu.com/questions/1332255/dual-boot-only-booting-into-windows-no-option-to-choose-between-windows-or-ubun & https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2432438 Many HP models may have similar issues Intel or AMD bigger difference.

Thank you. I'm deffo out of my depth here by a long way. I don't think changing the boot order will work now because Ubuntu is not installed after I tried to uninstall and go again. So I remain stuck on that error: executing grub install dev nvme0n1 failed

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
