HDMI audio not detected

cn flag

I'm on Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS, on a thinkpad T480. I just bought a new TV, and would like to use it to play audio/video from my computer, over HDMI. Video works fine, but I can't seem to get audio working. I know it's not a problem with the TV or the cable, because my nintendo switch works fine. I don't think it's a problem with my computer's sound card, because I've played sound over HDMI in the past (with a monitor, not a TV). When I do aplay -l the HDMI output is not even detected; I get

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC257 Analog [ALC257 Analog]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Any ideas? what commands should I run to gather more information?

EDIT: here is the output of sudo lshw -c video:

Where on the computer is the HDMI cable attached? To a video card or a sound card? If to a video card do you know that the video card also supports sound?

@David It is a laptop. There is only one HDMI port. It looks like a bug that HDMI output is not detected.

What video hardware are you using, and what driver? The proprietary Nvidia driver definitely should do HDMI sound, but not sure the nouveau driver will do sound

Yes, there's only one HDMI port, which definitely is capable of outputting audio (it did so on an old monitor)

I don't know how to check my video hardware or driver, can you tell me which commands will give me this information? It's a thinkpad T480 laptop.

Use lshw -c video to list all the video cards that have not been turned off from the BIOS/firmware. The "Configuration" line for each piece of hardware should list the driver.

Thanks! I added it to the question

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
