Virtual Machine isn't connecting to webcam

fr flag

I am running an Ubuntu guest on an Ubuntu host with KVM and Virtual Machine Manager. I want to use the integrated webcam, but its not working. For example, the application Cheese, produces a message of "No device found". The microphone connects fine, and other standard functionality is working properly in the virtual machine. What needs to be done so that the virtual machine can use the device's integrated webcam?

Did you add the web cam as a USB device to the guest machine? What is the output of `lsusb` on the guest?

All hardware is owned by the VM Host. The VM Guest can see only the Virtual hardware presented by the Host. If you want the Host to permit real hardware to be been by the Guest, then check your VM Host application settings.

@FedKad I'm not sure how to do that but I tried in Details view of Virtual Machine Manager but the VM would not start up. lsusb does not list a webcam, only a QEMU USB Tablet and some lines with "root hub"

@user535733 That makes sense. I didn't see a setting in the Virtual Machine Manager GUI. I can conceptualize that the host webcam output is a file and changing permissions of that file might be the way to go? I'm stuck at that point.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
