Can your laptop boot from the live USB or DVD that you used to install Ubuntu?

If I have a *power outage* or system goes down in an uncontrolled manner; I tend to boot *live* media (eg. Ubuntu installation media & use the "*Try Ubuntu* option) and `fsck` or file-system check my partition(s). If any errors/issues are found (and thus fixed), I'd expect normal subsequent boot. In your case I'd also explore the system & look for potential issues (ie. `mount` & general explore that things look like they should... I'd expect all good after `fsck`..)

I don't have a USB to install it.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
