Plantronics Blackwire stops working in Budgie 22.04

vn flag

I have a desktop running Ubuntu Budgie 22.04 and I've used a USB Plantronics Blackwire 2310 headset for maybe six months with no trouble. My apps are Signal and sometimes OBS to record training videos. The headset works fine on my MacBook.

A recent apt upgrade had some stuff about Pipewire in it and it didn't want to complete. I messed around with ordering the modules and got it to install. It's not unusual for me to go a week or more without having a call, so I forget the particulars, but I noticed it wasn't working yesterday. This is what happens when I attach it for calls. It's normally unplugged so I can listen to music.

Previously I would plug it in and it would take over. Now when I plug it in I see it in dmesg, but I have to mess with sound to be able to use it as a microphone in Signal. No amount of pointing and clicking will get the system to switch from 3.5mm audio jack speakers to using it for output.

I'm using the built in audio hardware on an older HP workstation if that makes any difference. lspci shows me this, I greatly dislike and do not use the Nvidia specific drivers.

05:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation GP106 High Definition Audio Controller (rev a1)

I have to do this on reboot to stop my speakers from buzzing and popping.

echo "0" | sudo tee /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save

I'm assuming this might have something to do with Pipewire, I tried to just uninstall, but it's now a dependency for OBS and Gnome remote desktop. A hint on what to try next would be greatly appreciated ...

I sit in a Tesla and translated this thread with Ai:

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
