Recent Updates Cause Sound Loss

ph flag

Running Ubuntu 22.04 on an Intel Atom/Celeron processor with an HDMI connection to a TV as display. Updates since October 15, 2022 (?), caused the sound service to fail to start at boot. Booting with a prior kernel did not correct the issue.

The box was upgraded to 22.10. Sound worked (HDMI/Display Port) UNTIL the updates since release were applied after installation. The HDMI sound option vanished and was replaced with a nonfunctional (via HDMI) Atom/Celeron Analog output (???). I tried installing pulseaudio (since "pactl" no longer was supported), but pulseaudio was apparently blocked by the system. An lsmod output showed the HDMI sound module but nothing connected to it.

Before wiping the system, I wanted to test operation with a 6.0 kernel, but the apt-get-repository command failed to complete.

22.10 has now been reinstalled but with only security updates. The sound works (so far) but the "Ubuntu Software" snap crashes when attempting to add VLC. Perhaps it is out of date. Terminal commands to snap refresh have difficulty completing or fail with timeout errors.

I am not familiar enough to readily identify the updates nor have enough time to try some/reinstall the OS/try again. I assume something has been done to replace pulseaudio (since the pactl command is gone). I have seen other questions posted recently regarding no HDMI sound, but they appear to be to specific to a kernel or other attribution. Since this issue affected both 22.04 and 22.10 RECENTLY, I suspect there are bugs in some recent release(s).

Is anybody aware of this issue?

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
