multipass/snapcraft: "instance does not exist" and Remote "" is unknown or unreachable

in flag

On a freshly installed Ubuntu Desktop I cannot build with snapcraft:

foo@bar:~/src/3rd-party/iot-example-graphical-snap$ snapcraft
Launching a VM.
Build environment is in unknown state, cleaning first.
info failed: The following errors occurred:
instance "snapcraft-iot-example-graphical-snap" does not exist
launch failed: Remote "snapcraft" is unknown or unreachable.
An error occurred with the instance when trying to launch with 'multipass': returned exit code 2.
Ensure that 'multipass' is setup correctly and try again.

So I thought I needed to install the right instance first and tried:

foo@bar:~/src/3rd-party/iot-example-graphical-snap$ multipass launch focal
launch failed: Remote "" is unknown or unreachable.

Huh?

The problem looks similar to this bug but with me it always fails not only the first time. snap clean didn't help either.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
