Why does the emoji picker require pressing ?

cn flag

When trying to use Ubuntu's built-in emoji picker (apparently bound to CTRL + . or CTRL + ; in Ubuntu 22.04 by default), I didn't understand how to use it at first. I was stuck with an e character and certain keys like backspace or the cursor key stopped working, which made me feel stuck. It looks that I'm not alone with that.

After asking the web it looks like one has to press SPACE after entering the emoji mode to actually do anything with it. According to the official documentation pressing SPACE actually shouldn't be necessary: It mentions "browse the categories at the bottom of the dialog or start typing a description in the search field." directly as the step after activating the emoji mode.

I'm wondering: Can I do anything meaningful in the emoji entering mode without pressing SPACE? If not, why is it necessary to press SPACE? From a UX perspective this feels counter intuitive.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
