Dual up - Ubuntu black screen after booting, even in recovery mode - can't access anything

gi flag

After a year in which I didn't boot Ubuntu and used only Windows on my laptop, I decided to return to Linux. Everything worked great.

I ran both sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade, and updated lots of stuff, including the drivers. Then I rebooted, and suddenly the Advanced options for Ubuntu were duplicated for some reason.

grub boot menu:

I chose the first option, just Ubuntu as I always do, and got stuck at a black screen.

Specs:

  • Lenovo Legion
  • Intel Core i7-9750H CPU @ 2.60GHz
  • 16GB RAM
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti

For the last 4 hours I read every article and question about this popular problem, but none of them helped me.

I've tried everything:

  • I tried to boot in normal mode with added nomodeset to the boot options of GRUB.
  • I tried to boot in recovery mode.
  • I tried to boot in normal mode of an older version.
  • I tried to boot in a recovery mode of an older version.

Options in grub boot menu:

Nothing is working. I'm still getting a stuck at a black screen. The last lines I can see are:

nvidia-gpu i2c timeout error
i2c_transfer failed -110
usci_ccg_init failed - -110

IAt the first time, I tried to get into recovery mode, with nomodeset and 3 in the end of the line to get to only text, I could see and use for a moment the terminal to enter my password, but then I got a black screen. I could see it for only a second.

I'm tired of trying. I think I have no other option except to hard reset Ubuntu and to delete all the data that's in there. Unfortunately there's a lot of data there (family pictures, work stuff, etc.).

I can't do anything. It gets stuck at a black screen and that's it. Nothing. I've tried Alt + Ctrl + F1/F2/F3/F4... worked.

All the guides are talking about that you have to get first to the terminal, somehow, via recovery mode or anything, and only then you can fix that by removing purge the NVidia drivers, but in my case, I can't access the terminal, I can't access anything other than the grub menu. Unless there is a way for me to remove the drivers from the grub menu, I think I am lost.

My BIOS settings are Legacy first for both options (I can't remember the exact names, but I can look it up if necessary), and USB boot is enabled. also, there is no option of Secure Boot or Safe boot.

Looks like an obvious missing detail from your *ubuntu grub menu commands* print-out. First of all boot into Live Ubuntu and copy/paste output of command *sudo parted -l* into your question. You can omit the part relating to your USB drive.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
