"document scanner" doesn't work with 22.04: cannot find any scanners, then crashes

mx flag

I've not had a problem before with 22.04 - I have a Brother printer-scanner (MFC-J5320DW at least 5 years old), and printing works. It connects via USB. (I am using X11 windowing system.) Document Scanner v42.0 Prints "searching for scanners", then doesn't find any, and won't quit when asked to. "Force quit" usually doesn't work (or takes ages >30sec) OCR v 3.4.0 () - gImageReader can't find the scanner either (the gearwheel rotates constantly). But it will quit if asked.

Hardware problem. I had a faulty USB memory stick. Nevertheless with the stick in, `sudo sane-find-scanner -v` crashed, after having tested the SCSI ports. After I removed the USB ram, sane-find-scanner found my USB scanner OK.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
