Setup external drive with live, ubuntu and data partition

pw flag

I would like to set up an external hd from an existing Ubuntu on my internal hd:

  • partition 1 with Ubuntu Live,
  • an encrypted persistent partition 2
  • partition 3 with Ubuntu encrypted, installed from the live partition.

Partition 2 shall be usable after booting from partition 1 or 3.

When the hd is connected at boot time, a boot menu should appear offering the choice of booting from partition 1, from partition 3 after password entry, or from the internal hard disk.

What is the best way to proceed? Thanks.

UEFI or BIOS install? External drives only boot from ESP if UEFI and /EFI/Boot/bootx64.efi. See this on install to external. Bug with work arounds for external drives. https://askubuntu.com/questions/16988/how-do-i-install-ubuntu-to-a-usb-key-without-using-startup-disk-creator I did not do encrypted install, but a full install and created an extra 6GB FAT32 partition and extracted ISO to it. When I moved boot, esp flags from ESP to FAT32 partition, making it ESP, then live installer booted. I normally boot ISOs directly from grub. I am sure you can boot extracted ISO from grub also.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
