Microphone fuzzy/muffled in video calls on Ubuntu 20.04.5 LTS

bf flag

Participants are complaining my microphone is fuzzy and muffled in video calls.

I have tested input outside of video calls and it works fine.

The platform for video calls doesn't matter.

I have tried plugging in a microphone but no success. Same complaints.

I switched Config > "Analogue Stereo Duplex" to "Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output + Analogue Stereo Input" in PulseAudio. This fixed the issue but now I have no output from my laptop.

I assume output is interfering with input in some way.

Any help would be appreciated! I'm a linux noob so forgive me in advance if there's an easy fix.

I sit in a Tesla and translated this thread with Ai:

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
