Network interface naming

Hello I would like to know how the kernel is naming the network interfaces. I have a automated installation for Rhel with predefined network interface names for the dedicated hardware. I would like to know if I change one NIC card if this names are going to change.

I found this: The kernel detects device hardware locations in terms of PCI bus number, slot number, and device number. That will not  ...

In a corporate context, with one AWS account shared by many developers, is it possible to keep stored data secret from each other?

For example, is it possible to configure an EC2 instance with an encrypted volume, and prevent even account administrators from changing the ssh key or decrypting the volume without at least triggering an email alert? Does AWS provide this level of isolation almost by ...

docker-compose with nginx and nextcloud FPM stops accepting https connections
si flag

I have a fairly standard setup, with nginx as a web frontend (with https certiticates and such) and a nextcloud FPM backend; the whole installation has very low traffic, since I am the only one using it.

At one point https stops working, every connection from outside results in either timeout or connection refused; in this situation it seem that nextcloud is working and nginx isn't. I thought it  ...

I want to forward ICMP and specific TCP and UDP ports on OPNsense but I'm unable to find a concise solution. Specifically I want to forward ICMP, http, https and UDP 32768-65535.

I'm adding a new port forward in the port forwarding section ("Firewall>NAT>Port Forward"). Here if I select "any" protocol, then I can not specify TCP/UDP ports. If I select TCP/UDP in protocol then specified port ...

Azure snapshots as VM templates
gb flag

I have multiple users that all need to use almost identical VMs - the VMs should have the same OS and same software installed. I can create one VM, set it up properly and create a snapshot that others can use to start their VMs from.

Is this the best Azure way? Or is there a better way? I'm mostly worried about updating the base snapshot when there's a new version of the software or OS.a

How to block IP range with nginx
ru flag

In my server, I use nginx as web server. This server receives many visits from bad bots.

I know how to block specific ip, editing /etc/nginx/nginx.conf file and within the server block, add this line (example): deny 74.208.136.135;

But I want to block all access from 74.208.***.***

Is this possible with nginx?

Unplugged a working UPS by mistake. UPS made a bang noise and never turned on again

I unplugged my running UPS by mistake. The UPS was new so the batteries were fine, also the load was very low. Could it be that the breaking of the ground path lead to the destruction of the UPS? Now it won't turn on and all the fuses I can access externally are not triggered

The UPS is the Eaton Ellipse Eco 1200

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
