Configure 20.04 as a VPN Router

gb flag

I'm a beginner ubuntu user. I've been searching the internet for months on how to do this and I literally even partially took an online course on networking and I still made no progress. I'm trying to configure a desktop with two ethernet ports as a VPN router. The setup I have in mind is this

WAN---> Modem ---> VPN Router ---> WAP & switch ---> LAN

I'm trying to make it so that

  1. everything on my home network uses a VPN
  2. everything on my home network uses my pihole dns server/ad blocker

Using a local DNS server is impossible with my VPN provider and the only way to use a (hosted) DNS server other than theirs without leaking DNS information is this setup. I've asked over live chat and they said DNS queries to 3rd parties are unencrypted.

My VPN connection shows up as 'tun 0' in 'ip a'. So, I'm guessing I'd only need to route the second ethernet port through this. I've been wanting to do this for over a year (before I switched from windows to ubuntu) and I have made no progress on this goal so far. Please help me. I'm fcking begging you. I read similar threads and they all assume some background knowledge that I don't have.

If you've already found some resources about how to do this, it's probably more prudent and expeditious if you would share those resources and tell us what you don't understand. If your VPN provider is telling you that DNS requests are unencrypted (not going thru the tunnel) then I'm not sure why you can't use a local DNS server.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
