HDMI is not a sound option in 18.04.5

gu flag

I am trying to get sound to play across HDMI on my Ubuntu 18.04 thinkpad x1 carbon laptop. Video works fine.

If I go into settings >> sound, the two output options are:

Multichannel output - sof-hda-dsp

Speakers - sof-hda-dsp

I have killed pulseaudio and restarted it. I have removed pulseaudio completely and reinstalled it after updating the repository, then killed all running processes and rebooted the laptop.

HDMI is not an option in pavucontrol. Only Multichannel output is a choice.

Running speaker test produces no sound of any kind:

speaker-test --channels 2 --rate 48000 --device hw:0,3

The only lead I've read in other threads like this one that seems plausible is maybe my home folder is owned by root and not me. But there was a dire warning attached to that suggestion and no followup. So I'm not sure how to verify that without messing something up.

Can you think of anything else I can check?

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
