Ubuntu 20.04.3 - Black Screen on startup

gb flag

I have a classic problem of "Black Screen" when Ubuntu starts and I'm not able to fix it.

The problem:

  • Without the "nomodeset" option in GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT, I have a blackscreen on the main monitor of my laptop, but HDMI monitor works.
  • With the "nomodeset" option in GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT, I have a blackscreen on the HDMI monitor, but main monitor of my laptop works.

Using "nomodeset" is not a solution as it use a driver that does not support lot of things (like second screen)

Computer specifications:

  • ProBook 450 G7
  • Intel Core i5-10210U
  • Intel UHD 620
  • Ubuntu 20.04.3 (fresh install)

Result of some commands:

You may want to try a newer kernel. https://itsfoss.com/upgrade-linux-kernel-ubuntu/

Thanks for your responses. I switch and boot to `5.14.5-051405-generic` and I still have the problem

It's strange because because on startup the main screen is working, when ubuntu is booting i see the booting messages on the main scren and then "at the end" the main screen is black and the secondary screen starts to work (HDMI).

If I change the screen configuration (clone etc) it does not affect the "main screen" and it stays "off" or "black".

I also try to change the settings like resolution and rate using xrandr and it doesn't change anything for the main screen (the screen stay "black")

My problem is solved after an automatic BIOS update from HP.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
