Slow Chrome rendering on Ubuntu 21.10 with Gnome

in flag

After upgrading to Ubuntu 21.10 from 21.04, Chrome has slowed down significantly when rendering. This is especially present on Slack, but it shows up in many other sites, too.

I'm running Gnome 40.4.0 on X11, with Chrome 95.0.4638.54 (all 64-bit). Wayland interferes with Zoom screensharing, so I've had to go back to X.org, but the issue was not solved by going to Wayland.

I'm also using the Nvidia 470.74 driver for the Quadro M2200 Mobile graphics card. I have tried it with hardware acceleration turned on and off in Chrome.

Are there any reasons for this, or anything I can try to address this problem?

As a follow-up, this was solved by turning off extensions completely. I don't consider this a valid solution, as "just don't use that part" without figuring out the root cause is worrisome.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
