Ubuntu 20.04 shutdown problem (no full shutdown, black screen freeze)

us flag

During shutdown using the gnome button (Power Off / Log Out in the upper right corner) my brand new Lenovo X1 Carbon won't power off properly. The power button LED switches off, the laptop appears to be powered off, but it isn't. Some keyboard key LEDs are still on (i.e. FnLock when it was switched on when I initiate shutdown).

The funny part: shutdown now on the terminal works fine.

Info: Secure boot enabled (tried with secboot switched off, no difference); i7 1165G7; Intel Iris Xe

This is the kernel log in the shutdown process:

I noticed the apparmor DENIED entries as well as the systemd-logind messages but didn't find any useful information that might be related to my issue.

Any hints are welcome! Thanks!

After a lot of searching I found this very relevant thread in the lenovo forum: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Ubuntu/X1-Carbon-Gen-9-Ubuntu-support-OEM-image-and-instructions/m-p/5096435

it almost sounds like a kernel bug, I had some on my LG laptop so I installed a newer kernel, specifically Xanmod, and since 5.11 my issues have not returned. I am currently running 5.14.16-xanmod1-cacule and am quite pleased, try it out, if it does not work or you run into other issues you can select the default kernel from the Grub boot menu

Yeah it definitely is a kernel issue. I am currently running the oem kernel (selected by default when installing on this machine). Haven't heard of Xanmod, will give it a shot! Thanks!

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
