Clean Ubuntu Install hangs on bios logo

jp flag

I am experiencing an issue with a brand new Ubuntu install (kubuntu 20.04.03 LTS). I was able to successfully complete the installation of ubuntu, up until it asks me to restart the computer.

At this point after restarting, my PC would run through BIOS (I can still press F12, Del etc.), then go black as it boots Ubuntu. It will then simply display the Aorus logo and hang there. PC will not respond to BIOS shortcuts except Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart.

Here is what I have done to try and resolve the issue:

  • Disable CSM
  • Disable Secure Boot
  • Disable Fullscreen Logo (you never know)
  • Install a different OS - Win10 works just fine on the drive. Yes I made sure to wipe the drive after.
  • Booting the installation USB and using that to repair GRUB - unsure if successful

I suspect it is some kind of failure of GRUB to communicate with the BIOS, however it's anyone's guess at this point.

My specs are:

  • AORUS B450 ELITE (BIOS is up-to-date)
  • Ryzen 5600X
  • NVIDIA EVGA GTX 1080SC
  • 4x4GB Corsair Vengeance RAM
  • 2TB Intel NVME SSD7
  • Asus C88 Wifi Card

Can I confirm the OS version? It's Kubuntu 20.10? Not 21.10?

Ubuntu 20.10 (along with all flavors) is *End-of-Life* and thus unsupported on this site (https://askubuntu.com/help/on-topic), and many other Ubuntu sites, unless your question is specific to moving to a supported release of Ubuntu. https://fridge.ubuntu.com/2021/06/18/ubuntu-20-10-groovy-gorilla-reaches-end-of-life-on-july-22-2021/ https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades

The 20.10 means it was the 2020-October release (ie. *year.month* is the format for releases) which had a supported life of 9 months from release; thus is EOL. Installs should have been upgraded to the next release (21.04) during that time; now 21.04 is in it's final months of support with users needing to *release-upgrade* to Ubuntu 21.10 (or the 2021-October release).

I was mistaken about the Ubuntu version, it is actually 20.04.03 LTS, which support ends for in April 2023

UEFI or BIOS install? Should be UEFI with that new of a system? Did you choose Safe Boot and then install of restricted drivers as you need the nVidia driver. Can you boot to grub menu. If UEFI, you need to press escape just after UEFI/BIOS screen and before grub menu would/should appear. Then try to boot recovery mode. From recovery mode, you can install nVidia driver, if you did not install it yet.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
