Boot Ubuntu 21.10 on Raspberry Pi 400 from external SSD

I'm trying to boot Ubuntu on my Raspberry Pi 400 from a Kingston 240GB external SSD. I've upgraded firmware in Raspberry Pi 400 to the recent one which allows booting from USB, removed the SD card, downloaded the Ubuntu 21.10 image from ubuntu.com and written it to the external SSD on another Ubuntu system with dd. The Ubuntu website says 21.10 should boot this way (while 20.04 doesn't support this, that's why I've downloaded 21.10), but when I actually connected the external SSD to the Raspberry Pi 400 via SATA to USB adapter and tried to boot from it, I got the following error screen:

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
