keyboard produces 2 Characters at one for certain keys

es flag

I have a strange problem with the keyboard on an HP Elitebook portable. Wrong characters are only produces when I press the shift key (capitals).

Errors persist (but with different characters if I use a different language). I was not able to test an external keyboard.

So I get Z| or Q| for pressing | (with the left or the right shift key pressed respectively) Y^ and U^ for ^ <" and I" for "

Reinstallation of the keyboard drivers did not help. Any suggestions on what are the reasons and possible remedies?

Sounds like a hardware issue. Can you try any LiveCD distributions of Linux and see if your keyboard works on any of those (ideally, different kernels/OSs)? Have you been running Ubuntu for a while and this started happening recently, or is their any other history you can tell us about?

It seriously sounds like it could also be an issue with the keyboard... I would try the thing that earthmeLon suggested before you get a new keyboard, though.

Also try to borrow a keyboard and try that.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
