Personally, if you are new to Ubuntu and are worried about your laptop, do *not* install it. I don't think anyone here is willing to give you guarantees that it will work. It's about learning and by learning, sometimes you break things. I suggest you try installing on a old, used computer first before trying on a computer you're really worried about.

The best way to check if Ubuntu will work on your laptop is just to try the live USB. It won't break your computer for sure. If you choose to install, the worst thing that can happen is that all data on your disk will be deleted, so you should make a backup copy before you try to install. There is no possibility of permanent damage to the computer. Even if your system will not work, you can always reinstall Windows again (I suppose you have Windows now).
