Why is a display resolution missing from Ubuntu on Xorg environment, but not from Ubuntu environment?

ru flag

I run Ubuntu 22.10 on Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 2020. Its graphic card is Mesa Intel® Xe (TGL GT2). I noticed the following:

  • When I log in to the Ubuntu desktop environment (which is default), I can choose the 1440x900 resolution (16x10 aspect ratio).
  • When I log in to Ubuntu on Xorg desktop environment, the 1440x900 resolution is not offered as an option.

I see the same behaviour through both the GUI (Settings > Display), and command line (xrandr). Also, the above resolution was available on Xorg in Ubuntu 22.04.

Why is this happenning? How can I re-enable 1440x900 resolution for the Xorg environment again?

Do you have xserver-xorg-video-intel installed? If so, try uninstalling it, to use the modesetting driver.

Thanks for the advice @AdamSelker, I did have xserver-xorg-video-intel installed. I uninstalled it just now, rebooted the computer, but my issue perissts. Is it sufficient to only `apt purge` this package, or should I do anything else?

I think that should be enough to switch you to the modesetting driver. Dang, was worth a try.

Have you tried manually adding the resolution, like in this question? https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/227876/how-to-set-custom-resolution-using-xrandr-when-the-resolution-is-not-available-i

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
