Faster network access from Ubuntu to a NAS, is caching possible?

gf flag

I previously used Windows; my new computer will be on Ubuntu with an M.2 NVME bootable. Also moving most of my files over to two NAS: one QNAP and one TrueNAS. I will access them over 1Gb Ethernet.

I fear the access to my files and directories will be quite slow over Ethernet, at least compared to accessing them directly from the local M.2 NVME. Could this be improved with some form of network access caching?

Is FS-Cache the go-to tool?

Let me know your suggestions.

Thanks

Without knowing what sorts of files you’ll be accessing over the network on a regular basis, it’s not going to be easy to answer this in any definitive way. Yes, data moving over a Gbit Ethernet connection will take longer to fully read compared to stuff on the local storage but, unless you’re doing everything over the network or running VM instances where the storage volumes are on the NAS, it may be a non-issue. Everything really comes down to use case and expectations of the individual

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
