How to make touch pad middle button + drag work?

pt flag

I have an HP Zbook Fury 16 G9 laptop, running Ubuntu 22.10. The touchpad has 3 physical buttons. These all work according the settings app.

However, it does not function for some applications that use middle button down while dragging on the touchpad. For example, in Blender, the pressing the middle button down and dragging rotates the view in 3 dimensions.

I have tried this in both X11 and Wayland. An external mouse functions as expected. My old Zbook worked fine, but unfortunately it died.

I used xev to see the events generated for touchpad and the external mouse. They are the same.

Oddly, the touch pad emulates the middle button by pressing the left and right simultaneously. The functions as expected, but is very cumbersome. I can't find any configuration settings that control the middle button emulation.

Under Windows 11 the middle button works as expected.

Thanks, Andy

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
