USB-C External Hard Drive not Detected

xk flag

I was using a SanDisk 4TB USB-C external hard drive until today, when my computer stopped detecting it. It doesn't appear in Disks, and there are no logs in dmesg or /var/log/syslog when the device is plugged in or unplugged.

I plugged it into a Mac I had lying around, and it can detect it. I reformatted the disk from ext4 to exfat in case that was the issue, but my computer still cannot detect it.

Any ideas?

System info: running 22.04 jammy, laptop purchased new July 2022

exFAT is a Microsoft format, not recommended for larger drives. The standard exFAT implementation is not journaled and only uses a single file allocation table and free space map. Better to use ext4 and resolve issue. You may not have a driver for exFat but I think one is available now. `sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install exfat-utils`

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
