I own an ASUS ROG STRIX laptop of 2021, operating a dual boot with Windows 11 and Ubuntu 22.10. My laptop has one HDMI port and one USB-C port, both capable of outputting signal to external monitors as tested multiple times with the Windows partition. For the USB-C port, I have confirmed that it is operational both with a HDMI-USB-C cable and with a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter.
While in the first couple weeks after installing and using my Ubuntu partition I was able to connect to two external monitors (the laptop lid was closed) I now am unable to do so, and only get access to one external monitor, regardless if the laptop lid is up or down.
Things I have tested so far, without succeeding:
- Switching ports and cables between monitors to make sure there is not an issue with a specific cable or monitor. That was expected since as I said everything on Windows works properly.
- Uninstall and reinstall ubuntu drivers
- Installing the lightgdm manager. In this case I was able to see that the second monitor actually got the input signal, but unfortunately I ended up not being able to access my Ubuntu partition as it was loading indefinitely due to an error in boot because of lightgdm.
- Updating the nvidia driver
I have also confirmed through xrandr that my second monitor is not detected. Another working theory I have is that my laptop, when in Ubuntu, can only support up to 2 outputs and that even when the lid is down it still acts as a monitor, not allowing for the second external monitor to take its place.
Regardless, given that I was able to operate two monitors after the clean installation of Ubuntu for some time, it is pretty strange that I am not able to do so anymore.
Hence, any help and tips are more than welcome, and I thank you in advance for your recommendations!
