Hirsute (21.04): Keyboard not working at login (lightdm)

in flag

I was messing around with some X server settings and nvidia drivers and found that on a reboot I couldn't type my login password. The mouse works fine. The keyboard works fine on another computer. I plugged the keyboard into the same port as the mouse - nothing.

I've purged and reinstalled all nvidia packages, desktop environments and display managers. I also purged and reinstalled xsserver-xorg-input-all. I deleted and recreated xorg.conf. I get the same results using gdm3 as lightdm.

The puzzler for me is that if I boot into recovery and then immediately resume - the keyboard works at the login screen!

I have absolutely no idea where to go from here and I've already sunk several hours. journalctl shows some errors in places but nothing that really grabs my attention. Happy to share though. Please help!

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
