Screen flickering and hdmi port not being recognized -- related problems?

in flag

I installed 20.04 on an HP laptop with Intel iris(xe) graphics adapter, dual-booting with Windows. The screen starting flickering after an update. I've read a number of suggestions and none seem applicable to me. I haven't tried Wayland, but it seems to me that the flickering starts before the X server is loaded. What works for me is to boot into diagnostic mode, and then continue to a normal boot. No flickering. However, I noticed a relationship with another problem I've been having: if I plug in an hdmi cable connected to a projector or external monitor, the hdmi display is not recognized. (And yes, I've read other posts about this problem.) I've had to stick to the Windows side to give presentations. BUT: recently I needed to reboot from Windows and didn't catch it in time and it booted normally into Ubuntu 20.04. Sure enough the laptop display was flickering. However an external monitor connected via hdmi was recognized.

Summary: 1. Boot first into diagnostic mode then continue booting into Ubuntu, normal laptop display, but hdmi port not recognized. 2. Boot directly into Ubuntu normally, flickering laptop display, but hdmi port IS recognized.

Any ideas? I'm guessing a normal boot initializes the graphics adapter in a way that booting first into diagnostic mode doesn't. I presume this causes the hdmi port to be recognized, but also causes the flickering. I'm hoping there's some configuration that can be tweaked to eliminate the flickering but still enables the hdmi port to be recognized. But I'm not sure where to look.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
