Many resource-hogging iexplorer.exe processes on all workstations
ph flag

Suddenly all our workstations are having an issue with sluggish performance. Inspecting task manager, there is a common culprit: several iexplorer.exe processes exist (~7 on average, but varies with time and machine) each with ~500MB RAM reserved. Periodically the CPU and disk usage associated with each spikes and the machine performance drags to a halt.

If I attempt to kill these processes they  ...

GCP Adding Private Service Connection IP range to master authorized network throws error

I followed this this GCP guide to be able to reach a Kubernetes Cluster private endpoint with Cloud Build jobs. I have set up everything (using Terraform). The final step in the guide is adding the (cloud build) private pool network range to the authorized networks of the cluster as such:

Hosting single intranet from multiple IIS servers

We have multiple physical locations at our company and each one has its own physical server, subnet, domain controller, Active Directory site etc.

I want to set up an intranet site on IIS that can be accessed at https://intranet.company.com

But instead of just hosting it from our central location, I would like each physical location to have a copy of the website and serve it to the computers at that loca ...

How to set up all domains as "virtually hosted" with Postfix
ae flag

I have configured a Postfix server with the main domain and several virtual domains, cross-checking multiple tutorials and the official documentation on virtual hosting. The Postfix is also set up to ultimately pass all mails to Dovecot, which should handle the (Unix) user mailboxes. In other words, all I need Postfix to do is address rewriting on the receiving end.

I am not able to open SSH in browser Terminal

I also executed the command "gcloud beta compute ssh [your_vm_instance] -- -vvv" in Cloudshell and I got the following output: ERROR: (gcloud.beta.compute.ssh) Could not SSH into the instance. It is possible that your SSH key has not propagated to the instance yet. Try running this command again. If you still cannot connect, verify that the firewall and instance are set to accept ssh traffic.

Ubuntu Server 20.04 has ModemManager installed?
id flag

how likely is to have a "clean" ModemManager installed in /usr/sbin on a Web only Ubuntu 20.04 server? The only thing I manually setup is Docker Engine and I deploy remotely with docker-compose. The SFTP service comes out of the box with this VPS.

Send signal to process and wait x seconds for it to disappear
jp flag

I would think this is a common idiom in Linux world so my question is if there's some build-in functionality for it ?

Something like:

Args:

$PID - the process to send signal to
$SIGNAL_NAME - the signal to send to the process
$WAIT_TIME - number of seconds to wait for $PID to disappear

The command I'm looking for would send the process $PID the $SIGNAL_NAME and then wait synchronously for $WAIT ...

Internal email server using non-standard ports

Our backup server is a Ubuntu box at the boss's house which has a static IP address from the ISP (Optus) but they block the usual email ports - I have no issue with this, it's well known. Can I configure the server and client to use a different port e.g. SSL on port 50332. It would be restricted to the domain (no sending to or receiving from other domains).

NTP Traffic, but NTP not installed
mw flag

I have recently started with OPNSense and have limited outgoing traffic to HTTP/s, SSH ports. When analyzing my blocked traffic i found sporadic outgoing NTP-Requests from my local Linux machine.

I am not very familiar with NTP.
I am now wondering a few things.

  1. The source port is always different. Is this normal behavior/ caused by the firewall block?

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
