Ubuntu 20.04 changing xorg screen blanking and timeout settings permanetly
cn flag

Using Ubuntu 20.04 but changed the windows manager to I3.

The screen is blanking out after 5 minutes. if I use xset s and xset -dmps then I can stop it from blanking out, but the settings revert back after every reboot.

I can't find how to make these changes permanent when I am not using the Ubuntu windows manager.

I don't seem to have any xorg or gdm3 configuration within my user home directory.

How to satisfy 'libadwaita-1' build dependency (in gnome/meson)?
bb flag

The question, in short:

How can I install the libadwaita-1 dependency for a meson-built project?

(Specifically gnome-calculator, if that matters.)

Background:

I was interested in making a small tweak to the Gnome Calculator app, just for my own amusement mostly (I want to change the π button to a button, because pi is wrong ;) ), and so was downloading the source and trying to build it, in hopes o ...

Supposed to see '~' when listing file in directory
us flag

I'm working on a assignment for school and I'm having an issue getting this portion to work properly.

The assignment is having me create a file in the CLI, open and edit the file in GEDIT without saving, then list the directory. According to the instructions, when I list the directory, the file I have open and appended but unsaved should display a '~' after it but it's not showing up.

Machine: Lenova T510 that had Ubuntu 18.04 on a different HHD, Ubuntu worked w/o problems until HHD failed.

HHD: SP SSD SATA III

I made a bootable USB drive using the same USB that I loaded 18.04 with. At first I used the Startup Disk Creator on the failing HHD (18.04) using the Tutorial here, but that didn't work, so I remade it using Rufus on my Win10 laptop following the tutorial here. I have  ...

Why doesn't Ubuntu provide the compiled version of emacs .el files
bo flag

I just noticed that when I start emacs on MATE 20.04, the system packages it loads are source files, not their binaries. I'm curious to know why since, as I understand, the binaries load much faster.

For example,

Loading /etc/emacs/site-start.d/50auctex.el (source)...
Loading /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/auctex.el (source)...done

Ubuntu 20.04 /etc/network/interfaces and ifupdown not connecting to internet
kr flag

As described in many askUbuntu forum posts, I installed ifupdown and removed/purged netplan.io. While now ifconfig and ip a yield the settings from /etc/network/interfaces (copied from an Ubuntu installation circa 2013, only updated eth0 in the files to enp4s0), there still is no internet. Some connection does appear to be there though, i.e. it recognizes printers on the local network.

Has Kubuntu 20.04.3 finally gotten Bluetooth right?

I really want a system that gets Bluetooth right. I've been suffering through the instability of Bluetooth in version 20.04, with a collection of fixes that work for some people but not others (and in particular not for me). I've read that these problems have been fixed in the 21.xx releases. I'd like to have a release that will be around for a while, but I want to get it now. So should I get 20.04.3, 2 ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
