resolv.conf & systemd-resolved: query next server on domain not found responses
tv flag

I'm trying to build a simple cascade DNS resolution algorithm for my laptop:

  • Query the servers provided by DHCP
  • Not found / failed? Query 8.8.8.8 and it's friends
  • Not found / failed? Query local dnsmasq on 127.A.B.C

Currently it seems that next server is only requested if previous one has failed one way or another, but if it has replied with an empty reply, the resolution process stops.

I have a setup with a Dell R730 with a 57800 network card, with SR-IOV enabled on a virtual switch. The issue I am having is that even though I can SR-IOV and it works with Windows guests, I am unable to get it to work with my Debian Linux Buster guests. I am trying to load the kernel module BNX2X, and have loaded the firmware from the debian non-free repositories. I have also tried Debian server 20.04, ...

Will NGINX break any active connection when I revoke a specific client certificate with CRL?
vn flag

Let's assume I have a client (e.g. IOT1) connecting to MQTT broker behind NGINX instance (terminating TLS is nginx's job) and I want to revoke that specific (IOT1) client, but what will happen with the connection? Will it be aborted or the connection will be still alive until the nginx or device will shutdown?

Linux VM movement between datacenters - different gateway IPs
us flag

I have three sites where Linux VM can move. The Linux VM has one NIC with one IP

Site A, Site B, Site C all have different gateway IPs. The last octet is incremented by one at each site (say 10.100.13.1, 10.100.13.2, 10.100.13.3). At each site the stretched VLAN is the same.

What is the most common "supported" way to dynamically set the gateway in linux based on proximity to a gateway? For example,  ...

Why same user has different password and system properties over SSH and GUI login (Debian)?

I am using a VM on Google Cloud Platform. Once created it can be accessed through SSH through the GCP web GUI. When I access through SSH, I can use sudo to perform privileged actions. When I access through a GUI method such as Chrome Desktop or VNC, I do not have sudo privilege. However I get my same username through whoami in either case.

I am confused because I have some assumptions:

I am trying to figure out whether an email header contains the IP address of the host who sent the email.

The header is supposed to have a number of received: fields, which list that one mail server has received this email from another.

What exactly does the first received: header contain? IP of the host, who sent email or IP of the email sender's mail server?

How can a user connected to Mikrotik router using ppp account reach DHCP clients?

IPSec site2site tunnel + vpn

In our research project, we needed to deploy a server "Molly" at another company. They made us set up a IPSec tunnel to their firewall/gateway and from there, the comms are forwarded to our server. Fedora Server 34 crashes randomly every few minutes on HP ProLiant DL380e G8
ar flag

I am unfortunately having a problem with my HP ProLiant DL380e G8 server running Fedora Server 34. I suspect these are memory errors or a DIMM being/going bad, however I'm not sure.

Feedback is very welcome!

I've ran journalctl -r, which returns the following output in the PasteBin link (a snippet of what looks out of the ordinary): https://pastebin.com/KPUZHceD

pfSense NAT to server in a second LAN subnet behind an internal second router (not working)

I have a pfSense firewall/router that is exposing some services to my public ip.

This is working fine, as long as the service is on the primary LAN subnet (192.168.1.0/24), let's call it LAN-A.

E.g. this works:

public_ip:443 -> pfSense (NAT) -> 192.168.1.20:5443 (reverse proxy)

I additionally have a second LAN 192.168.88.0/24, let's call it LAN-B, that is behind a Mikrotik router on 192.168.1 ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
