Two versions of a package installed
ck flag

I have two versions of polybar installed. Running polybar -v I get 3.5.0-12. which polybar gives /usr/local/bin/polybar. I am guessing I installed this outside of apt maybe (its been over a year since I used this PC).

But another version through apt is installed too, version 3.5.5 at /usr/bin/polybar

How do I go about removing the older version and make sure the one from apt repo is used? I honestly  ...

I'm using Ubuntu 20.04 ISO in Virtual Box 6.1.26. I have installed it several times already and it works, but sooner or later I always get that error and I don't know how to fix it. I usually leave it with 4GB of RAM and I've already tried changing from Display>Graphics Controller>VMSVGA to VBoxVGA and it still doesn't work, the error does not appear but the black screen remains.

How can I ensure that Impress / Powerpoint presentations are virus free?
kr flag

I use Ubuntu 20.04.

I am aware that viruses exists for all operating systems (Linux included). However, it is rather uncommon to get infected on Ubuntu. Besides that, to avoid any malicious software, I try to install only software that is available in Software Center.

Although I use Linux for numerous years and have no viruses issues, last time, I was shocked when I've tried to attach a PPT / Power ...

Allow a Python program run without root privileges to restart Elasticsearch
tr flag

There are a few suggestions out there with clues about how this might be achieved. It seems to me that the restart command of Elasticsearch shouldn't need root privileges, at least in my use case.

Basically, in case the ES service stops I don't want the user of the program to have the responsibility of restarting it, and the program, after detecting that the service is inactive/dead for some reason, sho ...

USB drive detected but no device created

I'm running Ubuntu 20.04 inside a VirtualBox VM (with macOS 11.6.2 as the host).

I have an SSD in a USB external drive enclosure (SIIG ASMT1053 USB 3.0 to SATA 2.5" Enclosure), connected to the host. I've gone through the steps to ensure VirtualBox passes the USB device through to the Ubuntu guest.

When I connect the USB device to the host, it is detected by the Ubuntu guest. However, no entry is cr ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
