where to put the resource folder when manually installing program
au flag

I know that I can manually install a binary by placing it it in /usr/local/bin or some other folder in my PATH variable. I'm not sure how to go about applications that have a resource folder around them.

i.e: Many programs that come without an installer will have some folder around them that contains a bunch of stuff that the program needs to run properly. The install instructions will say something  ...

how to move an desktop icon without a mouse
bb flag

I,m using Ubuntu 18.04

Sometimes my screen resolution gets changed, so few icons are not displayed anymore, because they are "to the right" of the screen.

Still I can locate them, move to them, using arrow keys, or by the first letter of their name. Then I can start them, using "Enter".

And I can move the open window of any of them, using "ALT" + "F7" + cursors, ending with ENTER. But the icon remains  ...

making a keyboard shortcut to open the screenshots app
mx flag

I have recently switched from windows 10 to Ubuntu 20.04 everything is going pretty well so far but one feature from Windows I kind of miss was that, when you pressed the print button, an app called 'snipping tool' would open up, allowing you to grab a screenshot of an area, a window or the whole screen.

Of course, I know that there's the screenshots app on Ubuntu that does the same thing. But by ...

Why sudo requires user password and not root password?
at flag

I was trying to understand why "su" fails and "sudo " is successful.

So, since the root account is disabled by default, the "su" command fails. fair enough.

But the thing that I can't get my grip on is the following:

When a user is trying to execute a command with root privileges a "sudo" is required. I would expect the prompt password to be asking for the "root password" (which at this point, by d ...

Laptop does not resume from suspend in Ubuntu 20.04
ca flag

I run Ubuntu 20.04 LTS on my Dell Inspiron 5577. I recently got the battery replaced, and after the battery swap, my system is failing to resume after being suspended. On waking up the system, a black screen with a static cursor is displayed, and the system does not respond to any keyboard or mouse input. This forces me to restart the system to use it.

Interestingly, if I resume from suspend with ...

Read DVD image with dd until empty
cn flag

I want to compare the SHA hash of the .iso file that I burned to a DVD with the image of the DVD itself to see if they are identical if the burning was succesful. The problem is that they are not, not because there was possible error, but because the way disk sectors work is that if 1 sector is half-full it reads all of it, or something like that.

Is there any way to use the dd tool to read only the ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
