My cron jobs aren't running when trying to save the script output to a txt file
ng flag

I am trying to have a python script run twice a day- once at 8:00 AM and again at 8:00 PM. My hope was to store the script output to a txt file on my computer named LOG_{date-time}.txt so I could look at "log" files in case something went wrong with the script. I set up the following cron job:

Force refresh of file cache in start menu

My disk was in need of a long overdue clean-up. I deleted around 70GB of files and folders from my disk using Dolphin (the file manager). When I now open the start menu, I still find a lot of cached files, that I have deleted, in the results. When I click on any of them, I will just get a message "Unable to run the command specified. The file or folder does not exist." After searching a bit more, I eve ...

Difference in behaviour between su and sudo
cn flag

I'm trying to understand the following difference I observed when running commands using sudo and su. I've simplified it to the most simple form.

Consider the following two commands:

su - myuser -c "sleep 600s &"
sudo -u myuser sleep 600s &

When considered with ps axu | grep sudo , the su command spawns one process for myuser only. Meanwhile sudo command spawns two processes: one as a root wit ...

virtual Y cable to sound card
er flag

is there a way to create virtual Y cables for my sound card hardware? In other words, I need to create two virtual copies of the hardware sound card.

The reason is I have two programs that need to access the sound card at the same time.

Both programs will process captured samples (mic or line input) simultaneously, but only one program will play back at any given time via speaker out.

Does this make s ...

Not able to add external display with USB 3 to VGA FL2000 chipset in Ubuntu 20.04
us flag

What am I trying?

Trying to add external display using USB 3 to VGA Fresco Logic 2000 chipset adaptor by compiling a driver and loading a module in the kernel 5.4.0-84-generic in Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS.

Problem I am facing.

As soon as I load the modules, the screen flickers, and lsmod shows used_by 1 but there's no display on the target device and the used by in fl2000 goes back to 0.

Htop shows a mysqld that isn't in filesystem?
gb flag

Upon cleaning up my filesystem and uninstalling services I don't use, I noticed that 'htop' shows what appears to be a MySQL daemon running at

/usr/sbin/mysqld

The thing is I don't have any MySQL installed manually, and I purposely removed MySQL / Maria installations. When I look at the location:

/usr/sbin/mysqld

It doesn't even exist on the filesystem. Systemctl status queries return nothing for 'mysql'  ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
