Undeletable "Icon" file
ru flag

I have a strange problem with some files on my NAS that are not deletable, maybe remnants of some MacOS file copy.

They appear with filename "Icon" in file manager but as 'Icon'$'\r' with ls.

Permissions are 755 (but 700 if I check them from MacOS), and I tried to delete them using rm -f 'Icon'$'\r' to no avail, resulting in a "No such file or directory" error in terminal.

I tried to use chattr -i

Keyboard & mouse stop working with kernel Ubuntu-5.13.0-22.22-387-g0fc979747dec - xhci: Fix command ring pointer corruption while aborting a command
au flag

tl;dr:

  • Keyboard & mouse don't work with certain kernels.
  • Not asking for a workaround, I already have that.
  • Using git bisect, I have identified the exact commit in the Ubuntu kernel repository where my input devices stop working.
  • What do I do next, given that the breakage does not occur in more recent upstream kernels?

  • Logitech G19 wired keyboard
  • Logitech G502 wired mouse

Black screen and white text on boot

Jay

I have just installed Ubuntu on my MacBook Air. I went through the standard installation, and it installed. Now it asks me for a password. I put it in, and then all I can see is command line, white text, and black background:

I can type in commands like help, but I do not know what they do.

It won't power off either. I press the power button and hold it, but nothing works. I am completely new  ...

How to set up UFW port forwarding from non-privileged port to port 22 on the same computer
vn flag

On my Ubuntu server, I am running an SSH server (port 22). I want to set up UFW such that all incoming connections are blocked, except through port 12345. External traffic arriving at port 12345 should be forwarded to port 22. How do I set this up using UFW?

Note that I want the SSH daemon's listening port to remain at port 22, because I do not want to run an SSH server on a non-privileged port ( ...

Making sense of openSSL certificate errors

Connecting to an API is resulting in an error OpenSSL::SSL::SSLError: SSL_connect returned=1 errno=0 state=error: certificate verify failed (certificate has expired)

How to open a file with a specific app from terminal

I wonder how to make an app open a specific file with one command in terminal in Ubuntu 20.04. Is there some sort of standard syntax for that or is that program specific?

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
