Airplane mode enabling on LID OPEN
ax flag

I have three laptops (two different HP versions) and a ThinkPad all running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.

After finally figuring out that the /etc/systemd/logind.conf was needing HandleLidSwitch=ignore set to keep it from suspending when lid was closed everything worked great as I wanted because it was causing "printer re-connection issues" from various states of going into suspend, lid being closed etc.

How do I install and configure the latest version of `solaar` to manage my Logitech wireless mouse or keyboard on Linux Ubuntu?
cn flag

I know I can do:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install solaar

to install the 3rd-party tool solaar on Ubuntu, so I can use it to pair and unpair new Logitech devices such as keyboards and mice to my unifying Logitech Receivers, and so I can see the battery status of many of these devices, but the solaar version installed is very old, doesn't show up properly in the top-right of my main screen, and over ...

How do I safely switch from GNOME to KDE Plasma?
fr flag

I'm currently running Ubuntu 20.04 with GNOME. However I would like to switch to KDE Plasma without actually installing Kubuntu from scratch. I then want to remove GNOME. So I thought I would do the switch by installing the kubuntu-desktop package, selecting KDE as my desktop environment, and then removing the ubuntu-desktop package, which to my understanding includes GNOME. Is this how I should g ...

webgl low performances under nvidia
in flag

I have a Dell XPS 15 under Ubuntu 20.04 with an Intel UHD 630 and Nvidia GTX 1050 configured in "on-demand" mode. In gaming it works properly. However when I use Firefox to load this demo under the Intel GPU, I can display up to 1000 fishes at 60FPS. Under the Nvidia GPU, it fluctuates between 20 and 30FPS, even with one fish. Under chromuim-based browser it's worse and limited at 15FPS.

How to >> as sudo?
cn flag

I am trying to understand why this simple command does not work.

sudo echo "a" >> /var/log/a.txt

It returns.

-bash: /var/log/a.txt: Permission denied

But I do have permission to rw by other means, for example editing it with nano

sudo nano /var/log/a.txt

or by being logged into root

sudo su -
echo "a" >> /var/log/a.txt

How can I "apply sudo" to >>?

Writing to encrypted home directory from live USB
gg flag

I want to replace my entire home dir with a backup. While not logged in, so I don't break things. It's encrypted and the backup is (unencrypted) on an external SSD. I plan to boot from a live USB and copy the data over. What's the best way access the home dir on the laptop so I can write to it? From what I can tell, it should be ecryptfs-recover-private with the parameter --rw.

How can I run complex piped commands in Autoinstall / Cloud-Init?
cn flag

In either cloud-init user-data runcmd, or in autoinstall late-commands, I need to essentially run this command as part of a Clevis + Tang initialization for a LUKS encrypted volume:

echo '<secret>' | clevis luks bind -d /dev/sda2 tang '{"url": "http://<ip-tangserver>" , "adv": "/tmp/adv.jws" }'

The problem is, I'm having a hard time determining if this is actually possible using either run ...

How to rollback entire system and not particular datasets?
in flag

I run zfs rollabck rpool/ROOT/*****@autozsys_hash on all datasets for one particular hash and it completely broke the system. I haven't recovered it yet, but I figure that this must be incorrect way of rolling back the system or is it? Does one need to run this command on each one of the dozens datasets separated on ubuntu? I think that it is a good idea to separate them, but does rolling back req ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
