"Unable to get valid context for user", Ubuntu 21.10, SELinux
cn flag

Every time I try to login, I get the warning message, "Unable to get valid context for Pasteldenata".

I am still very new to Linux, and I think this problem has something to do with SELinux. I enabled it this morning thinking it was a step towards keeping my system more secure. Upon enabling, I began to receive that warning message. I have since removed SELinux.

Issues setting up bash autocomplete for Python3 alias

I've got an alias for python3, 'py' - it's set up as you might expect in my .bashrc file.

alias py='python3'

The issue is that complete will only work if I try to complete with the base python command python prior. Here's an example in the terminal log below:

~/askubuntodemo: ls

Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS freezes, requiring a hard reboot
uz flag

I am experiencing regular system freezes running Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS on a Lenovo-Legion-5-17IMH05H with NV168 graphics card.

The computer does not respond to ctrl-alt-F1 and the only way out seems to be a hard reset.

I have two examples of syslog from the crashes. These would have been the most recent freezes, but it has already frozen once more whilst composing this question.

Please advise how I might  ...

How to install GRUB Legacy (0.97) on an USB pen-drive from Ubuntu 20.04/21.10?

How to install GRUB Legacy (0.97) on an USB pen-drive from Ubuntu 20.04/21.10?

Ubuntu does no longer provide GRUB Legacy in their repository.
grub-install command will install GRUB 2.xx.

Probably I could look for an old bootable distro that ships GRUB 0.97 and grub-install from there, but maybe it can be done properly from my main OS.

Old Ubuntu's GRUB 0.97 package contains all the binary files for

Can I do a mount /a in a custom systemd startup service
pe flag

I want to do a mount /a or mount /directory in a custom systemd service, is it even possible?

my service is my-service.service

It currently does not mount on bootup, but if I stop and start the service by hand, it works correctly, for example systemctl start my-service.service, works great (but I am entering in my password)

Is it not mounting on boot because it wants my password?

Is their a way to inject  ...

Where is Slack after an Ubuntu upgrade?
mm flag

I've just upgraded to VERSION="21.04 (Hirsute Hippo) and Slack seems to have disappeared from both my Favourites and when I click on Show Applications.

It's installed as a Snap package and I can launch it but:

  1. how do I return it to Show Applications and
  2. how do I get the icon back in the Dock (it just shows a grey and white document there instead of the Slack icon)?

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
