how to read raw data from disk
cn flag

I want to use LVM over LUKS. I just filled large disk with semi-random data: I've put LUKS on the new drive (with a password I have already forgotten) Then

dd if=/dev/zero of=<the whole encrypted PV>

Process has taken a long time... is almost ready... but now I am wondering if I made a mistake or not? So how do I check the disk to see if it is filled with zero's, or with random data?

21.10 - what's the suspend / hibernate call stack?
in flag

I would like to understand what is wrong with my linux system (or hardware). Sometimes I lose my session when the system is suspended, instead, it restarts then instantly without restoring anything.

I managed to find out the following:

    • pm-suspend: worked always
    • echo -n mem >/sys/power/state (invoked by pm-suspend): worked always
  1. suspension when closing the lid: works most of the time

Inscript Sanskrit keyboard layout in Ubuntu
cn flag

I am in Ubuntu Studio and I need to use the Inscript Sanskrit keyboard layout. I have found phonetic Sanskrit in the keyboard settings, but the Inscript layout seems nowhere to be seen, not even in iBus Preferences which, strangely enough, only has transliterations of Devanaagarii into latin letters under 'Sanskrit'.

Any ideas?

How to append to the end of a line before the first pattern match?
in flag

I have a file containing some random data like:

number1 number2 number3
&END

I want to add a \ to the end of the line containing number3, but I cannot match a pattern on that line as that number keeps changing. So I try matching "&END" in sed and then append a line before it, but that does not work for me because it creates a new line, like

number1 number2 number3

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
