charging via USB while sleeping is not working after an upgrade
tw flag

I used to use my Macbook pro with kubuntu 20.04 as power bank while on the road by keeping it suspended, and it worked fine. After the recent upgrade this stopped working.

As soon as the laptop is suspended, all the usb ports are turned off. It works with the MacOS, and it was previously working with linux too.

I tried to alter the USB suspend settings via tlp and via grub parameters with no success ...

How to grow file system to fill EFI system partition
cn flag

I wanted to increase the EFI system partition so I added 100 MB of unallocated space to it on gparted but after I executed the order it now gives a warning sign saying "101.00 MiB of unallocated space within the partition. To grow the file system to fill the partition, select the partition and choose the menu item: Partition>Check." So I clicked check but it just says error and doesn't repair it

20.04 on VirtualBox boot hangs
ng flag

This is a fresh install with updates and nothing installed besides docker. I have to reset, reboot to recovery to get past this. But then the next reboot it hangs. This has happened on dozens of installs. How can I track this down?

ETA: I’ve noticed that if I simulate pressing the power button with an ACPI shutdown command, the boot actually continues.

LAN installation with an Ubuntu server
ve flag

I'm reading a lot of questions about how to install Ubuntu without a screen or similar scenario. But I wonder if there is a network-based installer that uses another Ubuntu machine on the same LAN.

For example this is my ideal scenario:

  • embedded pc (x64/x86) without screen
  • it's connected to my LAN with an Ethernet cable
  • on my dev machine (Ubuntu as well) I run a software for the installation

Add an app to the launcher

I'm using ImageJ, which is distributed as a folder with Java files. I would like to add it to the app launcher. Unfortunately instructions from: https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-create-desktop-shortcut-launcher-on-ubuntu-20-04-focal-fossa-linux don't work. Right clicking on ImageJ icon on the desktop doesn't show Allow Launching option. What is the solution?

Getting to wi-fi login page when DNS resolution is borked

A while back I started having trouble with DNS resolution (Ubuntu 20.04). It may have coincided with uninstalling or updating protonvpn or that may have been a coincidence. In any case, I found I could fix it by opening up /etc/resolv.conf and changing the DNS server to 8.8.8.8 . I wrote a script to do that and now I run it every time I start up or un-suspend my computer. I've been doing it for a couple ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
