How to add custom shortcut which pastes a fixed string into the current cursor position?
fr flag

I have Ubuntu 20.04 and I would like to add a keyboard shortcut, which when I type 'asdf' quickly will copy paste a fixed string into the current cursor position. I tried adding a custom keyboard shortcut, but they can't be arbitrary keys. What are some other ways how I could achieve this? Can I somehow have arbitrary custom shortcut keys? I tried xbindkeys and xdotool but failed to shortcut a simple ke ...

Use locate (or find) command to locate files on Windows partition from Ubuntu
np flag

I use the locate command quite heavily to search for files on my system and I think it works quite well for me.

I am now on a system with a double partition (Windows and Ubuntu) and I would like also to be able to locate files on my Windows partition.

I tried to do

sudo updatedb

locate FILETOBEFOUND

but it does not work. Do you know if there is a way to make it work? Is maybe the find command a better o ...

Install 20.04 system libraries in 21.10

I'm facing a weird problem. I develop Qt/C++ applications. Until yesterday my dev machine and the target ones were both running Ubuntu 20.04.

Yesterday I had to upgrade my dev machine to 21.10 in order to run a specific software. Unfortunately, this has broken the compatibility of my executables:

Atom Flatpak using sandboxed runtimes and executables in package settings
cn flag

I'm using the flatpak version of Atom. I want to install a linting package for PHP, so that code errors are easier to spot. However it requires access to the php binary.

Now since this is a Flatpak, it's sandboxed so no chance of me giving it proper access to the /usr/bin directory any time soon, but I discovered I could use a Flatpak runtime of PHP 7.4 called org.freedesktop.Sdk.Extension.php74, whi ...

Can I use the drive URL to copy a folder with rclone?
se flag

Rather than navigate through the folder structure I'd find it easier to just use the drive URL that I could copy from - for example Firefoy. Like this:

rclone copy https://drive.google.com/drive/u/1/folders/some_id_from_gdrive .

Is it possible? or is it possible via some part of the URL?

What is regarded as the "latest" version of a package by apt?

I am wondering what the behavior of apt is when publishing multiple major versions of the same package. For example, if I have a package called foo, with a latest version of 1.0.0, and I publish version 2.0.0, then publish version 1.1.0 afterwards, which will be regarded as the latest package when running sudo apt updateand sudo apt install foo: the last package published (in this case 1.1.0) or the pa ...

However, when I turn them on and hit connect, they connect briefly (a second), and then disconnect. When that happens, the headphones go into discovery mode and I can't even turn them off anymore (I had to plug t ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
