ng flag

I recently switched to Ubuntu 20.04 after getting pissed of by Window's lack of wanting to work, apart from some small issues on linux almost everything seems to just be working for me but when transfering any files to a USB drive it quickly jumps to saying 100% done and then takes forever to actually transfer properly and say done.

I am dual booting Windows 10 and Ubuntu 20.04 but on Windows 10  ...

Internet sporadically dropping only on Ubuntu machines
in flag

I'm having issues with all my Ubuntu machines. The internet connection will sporadically drop for a few minutes and it happens frequently like every 5-10 min. It will reconnect on it's own or I can reboot my Google Nest Wifi mesh and the internet will reconnect that way too. Meanwhile I have internet on my phone and other devices. I looked at sudo watch netstat -tulnep and I see that my Nordvpn which ...

On screen keyboard shortcut
us flag

I use a 2in1 convertible. Usually, when i switch the device into tablet mode, the On Screen Keyboard activated.

Except sometimes it does not. And when it refuses to open up, the workflow for me always is:

Take device out of stand
Flip to Landscape mode
Flip out keyboard
Press some keys
Revert everything

Which is a huge pain.

Is there any option to add an On Screen Keyboard button to the taskbar so ...

What is policy kit used for on Ubuntu Servers?
vn flag

I put a bounty on this question hoping that I'd get a more nuanced answer other than no, don't uninstall it. What I really want to know is what is it used for. I have a few hundred ubuntu servers, some I (a fairly inexperienced sysadmin) made and these have polkit installed on them. Others were built by a legit sysadmin from a packer template and these do not have polkit on them.

How to disable alsa's Loopback Mixing by default?
gb flag

On Ubuntu 20.04

Sometimes it happens that the speakers emit an annoying sound when booting. I can solve with:

amixer sset 'Loopback Mixing' Disabled

Saving the settings with:

sudo alsactl store

The same is true if I launch alsamixer and disable the Loopback Mixing. When I restart the Loopback Mixing is enabled. How can I disable it so that on the next boot the Loopback Mixing is disabled?

Bash string split by delimiter constrained by number of characters
in flag

I want to split a long text separated by spaces through bash, but I fail. The command below splits into characters, but not delimiters.

echo "The quick fox jumped over the lazy dog" | fold -w 10
echo "The quick fox jumped over the lazy dog" | sed -e 's/.\{9\}/&\n/g'

It would be nice to have it for some user bash interaction.

Input syntax

format_text 10 "The quick fox jumped over the lazy dog"

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
