Where are the partition names /dev/sdx mapped onto the actual partitions?
us flag

I rearranged my disk partitions, figuring that I could account for the changes by modifying the files used by grub. I'm now trying to understand what actually happened. The oddest thing is that gparted now reports that /dev/sd4 is immediately followed by /dev/sd9. I'd like to understand how the dev names are mapped into the actual disk partitions, since they clearly are not consecutive, If I can u ...

Why does linux apparently ignore my drm.edid_firmware= parameter?
br flag

The monitor I have is old and has often acted flaky, so I'm sure the ultimate blame resides with it, however setting the drm.edid_firmware= parameter on the kernel command line is in theory supposed to override whatever nonsense kernel modesetting, X11, and Wayland come up with, yet it doesn't seem to work. Do I have to specify a connector even though the docs say leaving it off will override the settin ...

Is CUDA 11.5 compatible with Ubuntu 20.04 + Nvidia 470 driver + Geforce GTX Titan?
cn flag

I can't seem to get CUDA 11.5 to work Ubuntu 20.04 + Nvidia 470 driver + Geforce GTX Titan. After installing this CUDA version and rebooting, a dual monitor system becomes reduced to a single monitor system with a low resolution of 1920x1080 only. Also, a non-Nvidia driver seems to be installed.

I have checked that such a system can be installed with CUDA 11.4, everything works fine with this CU ...

Missing ~900GB of hard hard drive space
ae flag

I have a 2TB (1.8T) WD M.2 drive that appears to be missing several hundred GB's of storage space but I cannot find out where it is or what is taking it up. This also was happening on my Samsung SATA SSD so I don't think it has anything to do with the drive itself. This is the only partition on either of these drives.

df says that I am using 1.3T of data

New server, aliases file doesn't work, virtual does
cn flag

So, my question is: Why doesn't postfix simply use /etc/aliases to redirect incoming mail to external email addresses like I'm used to when I used ubuntu 16.04LTS?

Follow up question: Is there a simpler way to use /etc/postfix/virtual that I'm missing?

I have a new server and the email handling doesn't work the way I'm used to. I've spent most of the day scouring tutorials and manuals, but am still ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
