How do I zip a folder without including all folders in the path?
cn flag

I am attempting to zip a website's home directory but the archive contains the entire path of folders before getting to the one to be zipped. The command zip -r compressed_data.zip /home/vivek/public_html results in compressed_data.zip containing home->vivek->public_html rather than simply public_html and its contents.

What switch can I add to the command to omit including all folders in the path? ...

simple scan reports "unable to reach scanner"
in flag

I have an HP MFP M28-31 laser printer connected via USB lead and running on Ubuntu 20.04 . I have followed the advice to install hplip-gui and simple-scan - both are latest versions. Attempts to scan result in the above message. This is driving me mad!! The scanner status says "busy" when it is clearly not. Is there some kind of job queue that needs to be cleared and if so how?

Media Players Eating Up All The RAM Upon Playing Video Files
id flag

Everytime I tries to open a local video file (e.g. mp4 and mkv format) with VLC, SM Player, MVP Player, or any other video players, it uses up all the RAM which leads to computer crash. I thought this might be caused by the lack of decoders, so I installed the ubuntu-restricted-extras package from apt after doing some research. However, the situation was left unchanged after rebooting from the installat ...

Snap vs system container
cn flag

I have seen this: what's the main difference between Docker and Snap?

I don't quite see the difference between snap and system containers.

  • VM has a separate Linux kernel and used fixed host resources using hypervisor.
  • Linux Container (system container, re-uses/share the kernel, and uses dynamic host resources.
  • Docker do not share the kernel, but a docker demon (early docker used Linux container) ...

How do I boot to recovery mode in Ubuntu 20.04?
cn flag

To solve another problem I am having, it has been suggested that I need to "reboot to secure (actually recovery) mode". I don't know exactly what this means.

I have been in the BIOS of my Dell XPS laptop and I have ensured that Enable Secure Boot is switched on. Does that mean that I am already securely booting?

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
