Lately, after resuming from sleep, Ubuntu requires my modem to be rebooted to restore an Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection
cn flag
  • I'm using Kubuntu 21.10 with kernel 5.13.0-22.
  • It happens with both Ethernet, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, and 5GHz Wi-Fi connections (two separate Wi-Fi networks).
  • Things worked fine until this week.
  • Rebooting the laptop does not help.
  • The Windows installation on the same laptop does successfully connect.
  • My Kubuntu live USB does successfully persist its connection through sleep, so it's something with my OS install ...

Lenovo 14ACH5 - ACPI Error on boot

I can't boot normally anymore... It's stuck at the Lenovo logo in boot. When quiet splash is removed I can see the error below.

I still can boot by setting nomodeset after quiet splash but that does mean I can't even control the brightness of the screen.

Now I booted to Windows (instant regret), updated the BIOS, reboot, UEFI partition f'ed (even more regret for booting the MS crap), created and boot ...

My Ubuntu server 20.04 keeps freezing after a few hours of operation to the point where the fan is running hot and I can't even establish a connection to ssh to it.

After rebooting it behaves normally with no CPU load spikes or memory issues. The server is a fresh install and only really running an empty MongoDB database.

I looked at the kern.log and found it flooded with these logs at the time befo ...

Installing Ubuntu with 3 Drives
ng flag

I'm installing Ubuntu 20.04 on my main PC. I have 3 drives, a 250GB SSD, a 1TB HDD, and a 2TB HDD. I don't know enough about Linux file systems to partition everything out, but I know I want my /boot directory on my SSD. Is there a way that I can select where that one directory will go and let it automatically divide up the rest? If not, what do you think is my best option here?

Network manager is occasionally not running after startup
cn flag

The issue is that sometimes after boot NetworkManager service is not running. It works fine to start it manually sudo service network-manager restart or reboot the computer but since I want to access these computers remotely that's not always an option. Most times booting works fine (NetworkManager is running) so its hard to reproduce, say it only happens once every 20th boot.

Why iptables rule has no effect or doesn't get applied on Ubuntu 20.04?
cr flag

I applied the following rule:

sudo iptables -t nat -I OUTPUT -p tcp -o lo --dport 443 -j REDIRECT --to-port 3000

And the command ran without errors.

However, it is not doing what it is supposed to (redirect 443 to 3000 on localhost), and when I check the rules in place, I get nothing:

>> sudo iptables -L

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
